In light of how the airlines are cutting back their schedules this fall, what can I do - and what recourse do I have - if my flight is canceled?

Why don't you recommend that passengers contact their travel
agent ? More than like;ly they'll get to them faster than waiting on the phone for the airline.
Sometimes, the airline has already rebooked the passenger.

I worked as a traevl agent for a number of years. We were godends
to a lot of people !

Here are couple other suggestions the author missed:

    1. Don't get angry! I have found that people who become angry and/or abusive to the staff do not get re-booked as easily as those who stay calm. I have even scored a first class seat just be being patient and courteous.

    2. A traveler should keep in mind alternate airports as well as other flights to the desired city. For instance if you are trying to fly to Philadelphia, then you have the option to fly into BWI or Newark instead. Once at either of these alternate airports you can grab a train to your final destination. Even with the added train travel time you can sometimes get to your final destination sooner.

Excellent advice about the alternate airport/train.

Also, you're right, they don't need to get bent out of shape
      because the flight has cancelled.

It seems to me, that people, become whole other beings when they
      travel.
